Q1. If I play more than one instrument, can I continue to have lessons on my second?
A. For students at the School of Music who opt to do Performance Studies (compulsary for BMus students), 30 minute weekly (or hour fortnightly) lessons with professional tutors in one instrument are paid for by the University. Additional lessons must be paid for by students. The tutors are more than willing to negotiate this and offer reasonable rates. Cheaper rates can also be found by consulting local teachers, many of which advertise on the notice board in the music foyer.
Q2. I'm taking a subject other than music. Is there an orchestra or choir I can join so I can keep up my performance skills whilst at University?
A. Yes, both the Univeristy Symphony Orchestra and the Choral Society are open to students from any School. In addition to this, various chamber ensembles run by staff and students are open to all students at Cardiff (Chamber Orchestra, Chamber Choir, String Orchestra, Concert Band, Big Band, TCUPS Choir and more). Pop along to the School of Music foyer during Freshers' week to sign up for an audition (the Choral Society and most student-run ensembles are not auditioned).
